A 19-year-old Sebastopol Boy Convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter After Killing his Friend Over Video Game Feud
Sebastopol, California, June 2019: Sometimes, it is hard to imagine the bubble in which teenagers live in these days. The intense gaming passion of Anthony Ibach, a 19-year-old boy from Sebastopol, CA manifested its ugliness when he killed one of his own friends after a small argument over a video game. However, the boy is lucky to have escaped the conviction of murder, and has been adjudged to be guilty of voluntary manslaughter by the jury.
The Unfortunate Turn of Events on that Day
Anthony Iblach (19) and Cory Vaughn (19) feuded over a Play Station game which resulted in an ongoing argument between the two. However, when Anthony drove to the place where Cory and his friends were playing and having a ball, he did not have an idea that he will be outnumbered in such a way. The fight which took place in the downtown Sebastopol restaurant’s parking lot saw Anthony stabbing Cory which directly resulted in Cory’s death.
The Proceedings and Final Verdict
The prosecutor stated that Anthony had gone to confront Cory and his friends while defense attorney Joe Bisbiglia argued that they outnumbered him and tried to attack him. He used this in the favor of the accused saying that Anthony stabbing Cory Vaughn was an act of self-defense, and requested the court to consider him for a lesser crime than murder. The 12-memberjury committee acquitted Anthony Ibach from murder charges, and convicted him with voluntary manslaughter charges on the grounds that he possessed a deadly weapon. This also increased one year in his sentence of a total of 12 years of imprisonment.
It is considered a noteworthy victory for attorney Joe Bisbiglia, as converting a murder case to voluntary manslaughter is by no means an ordinary effort, especially when we consider the high conviction rate in murder cases. Also, the fact that the accused faced all the charges with maturity was noticed by everyone. However, Cory’s family was not too happy with the final verdict. Bisbiglia later admitted that such cases never have a clear winner as the verdict is always sad for both the involved parties. He also thanked the court for not convicting Ibach with murder charges which will give him an opportunity to complete his studies, and move ahead in life.
Such cases teach a lesson to the teenagers who act immorally in a fit of anger and emotion. It also sends a strong message in the society that the law is above all; and the culprits will be punished irrespective of their age group, and even for the slightest of the crimes they commit.
